Al Toothman earned his Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia Tech after a stand out high school career at Parkersburg where he played football, basketball and baseball. In his senior season, Al was named to the All-State Basketball team and the Region I - AAA All-Tournament Team.
As a Golden Bear Al led the Conference in free-throw shooting percentage (88%) and was the second leading scorer for Tech, contributing 15 points per game while connecting on 50% of his shots from the field. Al’s best offensive games came against West Virginia Wesleyan when he scored 32 points then followed it up with a 31 point performance against Salem-International. Al was named to the WVIAC All-Tournament Team in 1968. After graduation, he found another talent and took up golf. Currently he has three holes-in-one to his credit.
As a professional Al worked as an industrial engineer or Westinghouse Electric Lamp plant in Fairmont from 1968 to 1975. He later went on to work at Kaiser Aluminum where he served in several capacities including Senior Industrial Engineer, Personnel Manager, and head of Labor Relations. Toothman would retire from his post on the West Virginia Manufacturers Association Board of Directors in 2002. In 1998, Al was appointed to the West Virginia Enforcement Commission by then Governor, Cecil Underwood. Presently, he is a member of the Jackson County Development Authority for the last 20 years.
