Arthur Bernard Culbreath (Knotty) was born February 8, 1965 in Atlanta Georgia where he excelled in athletetics at Southwest High School/ Benjamin E. Mays High School. As the starting point guard for his basketball team, Arthur guided his team to the state championship tournament where they finished as State Runner’s - up.
After high school, Knotty was recruited by Tom Sutherland to attend West Virginia Tech and play basketball. Culbreath was forced to sit out his first season due to an injury before moving into the starting line up his sophomore year. Culbreath led the Golden Bears in blocked shots as a shooting guard his sophomore season and was also named to the All Conference - All Tournament First Team for three consecutive seasons.
Arthur was also named to the First Team West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference his junior and senior seasons at Tech and was also named the WMON Radio player of the year two years in a row. Clubreath was also named as the WMON player of the game a numerous times during his career. Arthur was also awarded the prestigious Orndoff Award which is given to the School’s Top Athlete at West Virginia Tech his senior season.
After leaving Tech, Culbreath made the USA National Handball Team where he competed from 1991 – 1997. In 1995 he won a silver medal in the Olympic Festival in Boulder Colorado. Arthur also competed in the Pan/ American Games in Brazil as a player/coach where he lead the team to a fourth place finish.
Knotty now lives in Sandy Springs, Ga. with his wife, Dr. Ann Culbreath and their six year old son Alex. For the past 20 years, Arthur has worked with the City of Atlanta Parks Design Department as a manager. When Arthur is not at work he can be found on the golf course working on his game in order to lower his handicap (3). That passion has led him to play on the Celebrity golf tour. Recently, Culbreath traveled to St. Thomas where he finished in second place with a score of 66 behind John Daily of the PGA Tour. Arthur also enjoys fishing with his older son, Antoine, in the back waters of Naples, Florida or the open Sea’s of Hawaii.
